Individuals may experience hearing loss as a result of congenital (existing at birth) abnormalities; traumatic brain injury; noise exposure; neurological diseases; tumors; allergies; ear blockages, such as impacted wax; chronic ear infections; or a ruptured tympanic membrane (eardrum).  Hearing loss may cause impaired learning and development, delayed speech, social isolation or depression.
